Nurseries - Learning Through Nature
In addition to our popular extra-curricular clubs, we also run more formal 'Learning through Nature' in the form of Forest School and curriculum-based workshops and visits for schools and nurseries, as well as our Saplings groups for parents and pre-school children.
Forest School for nurseries
What is Forest School?
The first Forest School was launched in the UK in the 1950s, inspired by the ‘nature nurseries’ that already existed in Sweden. This ‘outdoor’ approach to learning and play can have a great effect on the natural development of children, helping with social skills, confidence, learning capacity, problem solving skills and emotional well-being. Not to mention the added benefit of Forest School children being out in the open air surrounded by nature rather than being confined to a classroom.
With long-term, regular access to nature and the outdoors, it has been proven that children are happier, less likely to be off sick, develop better levels of concentration, are less stressed and irritable, more respectful and have a high capacity to work in groups.
How does it work?
Forest School is a long-term, child-led approach to learning. We recommend a minimum programme of six to ten weekly sessions.
This is designed to allow children to become familiar and comfortable with the Forest School concept, natural setting and the new experience of learning outdoors. Sessions usually last two hours per week, and take place on the same day, at the same time, to establish a set routine.
The cost is £130 (+ VAT) per two-hour session – classes can hold a maximum of 25 children per session. However, sessions and price plans can be adapted to suit your individual needs and budgets.
Due to the child-led ethos of Forest School, session content is reviewed weekly and adapted according to the needs and interests of each particular group of children. Activities are reintroduced each week to allow children to continue their learning from the previous session and move on to new activities in their own time.
Sessions can take place in your nursery grounds or a local park or green space, and can be planned to suit your curriculum needs. The content of each session will vary depending on the age, season, topic and the needs and requirements of each setting.
Please contact us here to arrange a meeting to discuss your specific requirements.
“The children have become fascinated with nature since starting the Forest School sessions. They have become more respectful about the world around them, clearly heeding to what they have learnt with Katie. The sessions have sparked new interests with them; all three nurseries now embarking on bug hotel projects in the coming months. Forest School sessions with the Outdoors Project is an experience we will very much revisit in the future!”

"We offered weekly sessions with The Outdoors Project during the whole of the school year and even managed when the grass was covered in ice. Beth and Jess were excellent with the children and it was great to observe the children pretending to be 'the forest school teacher' while in the garden. We had originally planned the sessions for just the oldest children within the setting as a way of spending our EYPP fund but soon realised that the two year olds were interested too. Fantastic opportunities each session to encourage exploration of the environment and so many opportunities to extend language. Thank you so much for a brilliant year."
