Gangsta Granny Heist Game

Hey kids,

Outdoors Project leader Helen has a game to share from one of her favourite David Walliams books "Gangsta Granny"!

This is one of my favourite books, Ben and Grandma make a great team!

I'm going to show you how to build your own laser maze and assault course to steal the crown jewels and escape to victory!!

If you haven’t seen the film, here’s a link for the film version of this great book on CBBC.

The Game:

Plot Summary: Ben visits his granny every Friday whilst his parents go Ballroom dancing. She has no TV, a weird obsession with cabbage and he finds it boring. One day he phones his mum begging to be picked up whilst he thinks granny is asleep but she actually overhears the conversation. The next morning Ben feels bad about the conversation and whilst making tea he gets the biscuit tin out which feels heavier than usual and turns out to be filled with expensive jewels.  Granny confesses she used to be an international thief known as the Black Cat during her youth and pulled off tons of high-profile heists but never managed to steal the crown jewels. Ben and Granny then devise a plan to raid the Tower of London to steal the Crown Jewels together as one final heist, bringing them closer as family and hilarity ensues.

The Heist - ESCAPE TOWER of LONDON

The aim of the game is for Ben to make it into the Tower of London and steal the crown jewels then make it back.

Build a laser maze using string, wool, rope or tape either in your garden or in the house. String or wool is easy to wrap around furniture, trees etc. Challenge yourself and another to creep through the maze not touching any of the string or you will raise the alarm and alert the queens guards (Beef Eaters). The aim is to sneak past the lasers, steal the precious crown jewels (this can be anything from a soft toy to a hairbrush!) and sneak past the lasers again on your escape.

You could start off with an easy maze and then keep adding lasers each round to make it harder and harder! Time yourself to see how long it takes for you to steal the jewels and escape, then try to beat that time each round.

ACTIVITY TIME: 20 minutes to set up and play as many rounds as you like.

EQUIPMENT:  String/wool, treasure of some kind, cello tape and any fancy dress / burglar outfit you can find (not essential)

ANSWER TO YESTERDAY'S RIDDLE:   "What has many keys but can’t open a single lock?" A Piano!

TODAYS RIDDLE:  I’m light as a feather, yet the strongest person can’t hold me for five minutes. What am I?

FACT OF THE DAY:
An Apple, Potato and onion all taste the same if you eat them with your nose plugged.
Our sense of taste is 80% made up of our sense of smell.

If you were to blindfold yourself and plug your nose, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between these three foods! Who wants to try?
