Merlin's Magic Potion Making

Merlin the legendary wizard was King Arthurs personal advisor back in the day (medieval day to be exact). Now being a wizard, you must have a good knowledge of all things magical when it comes to helping your pal – the King - through some challenging times. Magic potions would be especially useful to a King and his knights of the round table surely?

A healing potion, a strength potion, an invisibility potion, a tidy my room for me potion? All very useful and I’m sure it took quite a lot of experimenting before he got the ingredients just right. Fortunately for you Merlin (aka our club leader Mook) is willing to share his knowledge with us on how to craft such wondrous things.

After School Club fun

  • 1 x Container for your potion – A Glass Jar is ideal to see into or if you happen to have a spare cauldron lying around that will also work…
  • 2 x Table Spoons of Bicarbonate of Soda (Baking powder) – Crucial ingredient
  • 1 x Large glug of Malt Vinegar – Crucial ingredient
  • 2 x Table Spoons of washing up liquid
  • 1 x Table Spoon of Food colouring (you could always mix a bunch together and see what happens!)
  • 1 x Teaspoon of glitter (optional)
  • A good splash of water
  • Some earthly natural ingredients – fallen leaves, flowers or seeds. Just don’t pull apart living plants!

  • Now be warned this is a messy procedure so please make sure you are in an environment such as the kitchen or garden where it will not damage anything as this will ERUPT. We’d suggest putting newspaper down as a precaution and use grass if you can.
  • Mix together all of the ingredients except for the vinegar (very important!!!).
  • Your potion needs a name and a spell it will cast. I call mine Willy Wonka because it makes every food taste like chocolate, even Broccoli, delightful!
  • Once all these ingredients are together, transport it to where it is safe to add the final ingredient..
  • Add your vinegar and stand back! The potion will come alive and begin foaming together and erupting. Congratulations you have created your spell!
  • Please send us in some photos of what you have created, we’d love to know!

No Drinking! This potion is not made for mere mortals to consume so please do not taste any of the ingredients.
If you are allergic to any of the ingredients then leave them out. Please ask permission before you use any ingredients and you only need the measures above, no need to use too much and waste it.
This is messy!! Please make sure you do this in a safe place and tidy up afterwards.

RIDDLE: I am always hungry and will die if not fed, but whatever I touch will soon turn red. What am I?

FUN FACT:  Only 5% of the Ocean has been explored.   Alongside this only 1% of the seabed has been discovered and explored. Sea exploration and mapping didn’t truly start until the 1960s due to the lack of technology beforehand. So keep an eye out for mermaids and sponge bob!
