Teaching kids about fire safety & its history... Bushcraft Firelighting // ODP Deeper Dive

During after school clubs this term one of the activities being run is Bushcraft Firelighting.

We describe Bushcraft to the kids as living within a natural environment using skills to survive, fulfil your needs and make your stay comfortable whilst leaving no trace once you have moved on. Fire is such a broad topic and so depending on the age range different aspects can be explored.

Creating and fostering an environment for the kids to share their experiences of fire while educating them on some of the historical aspects means it is one of the standout activities of the term. Fire is the basis of our lifestyle, despite the fact technology has meant we don't directly use fire for many things any more. A lot of appliances in our house (kettle, iron, oven etc.) have derived from fire.

The kids absolutely love being able to enjoy practicing fire lighting while being safe, a skill they don't get much exposure to otherwise!

Would you like to foster these experiences for children in your area?
